William Hazzard Fuller papers, 1836-1979.

Correspondence, receipts, and coats-of-arms for the Guerard and Roche families. Includes 3 letters from author William Gilmore Simms to William Fuller and his wife, "Washy" [Anna Washington Govan Steele Fuller], relating news of the birth of a son (28 July 1859); comments on heavy rains at his plantation home, Woodlands, "Grass terrible to contemplate. Eight negroes laid up yesterday - at the fear and sight of it - I suppose" [2 July 1860]; and letter, 6 Oct. [1861], discussing crops of corn and cotton, and his experiement with cultivation of one and a half acres of long-staple cotton for which he requested that Fuller "pick me up an old hand gin," and commenting on the usuccessful results of his attempt to grow Sea Island cotton at his property [a site formerly located in Barnwell District, now Bamberg County, S.C.], "the objection to it here is, that it matures too slowly & requires a longer growing season than we can give." Letter, 26 Nov. 1851, from M[argaret] Cabell, University of Virginia, acknowledging receipt of Fuller's letter to Dr. [James Lawrence] Cabell and also the daguerreotype of Richard Fuller; printed biographical sketch, 1 Sept. 1874, re life of the Rev. Richard Fuller (1804-1876), a native of Beaufort, S.C., and one of the founders of the Southern Baptist movement, published in the Baltimore Baptist Visitor. Volume, 1851-1871, containing Reconstruction-era plantation work records, 1868-1871, of African-American laborers identified by name, and receipts for subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, along with record of expenses for household and plantation supplies, accounts with Fred[erick] E. Fraser, Fraser & Dill, and Fraser & Thompson, receipts re the estate of William Fuller, and 2 promissory notes, 21 July 1863, to pay William Gilmore Simms $350 with interest on a loan and $450 for books bought in 1858 and 1859.
